Arizona JOAD celebrated the ninth year of hosting the 2012 Iron Archer by conducting the biggest and best Iron Archer ever.  47 took part in ranking round, 46 began the round robin matches.

Saturday December15

47 archers shooting AB/CD lines compete in a USA Archery sanctioned 18m x 600 ranking round.

Sunday December 16

The field was then divided into 8 groups (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper, Yellow, Red, Blue, Black) based on qualification ranking score that competed in individual matches using the set system.

2012 Iron Archer Champions:

Gold Flight: Randy Ulmer
Silver Flight: Seth Waldrop
Bronze Flight: Colin Potter
Copper Flight Alexis Ruiz
Yellow Flight: Cody Johnson
Red Flight: Kevin Bailey
Blue Flight: Brian Bullis
Black Flight: Wesley Lewis

Highlights:

  • Top ranking score of 581.

  • Leader board provided via every other end running score collection, Ianseo computerized system, and video projection operated by experience World Archery and USA Archery trained and certified staff.

  • JOAD archers looked sharp in their club shirts (Paseo Vista, Corner Kidz, Hearn Archery, Desert Sky Archers, Arizona Archery Club)

  • The matches were conducted with two matches per target matt, four target faces per target matt.  A B C D signs per added to help quickly identify each target face.  Target number were placed on the top of the target matt.

  • Set score flip cards were mounted to each target stands cross bar which allowed the archers, tournament and spectators to keep track of the competition.

  • 46 compete in round robin matches using AB CD lines shooting on 12 targets.

  • Score flip cards display match progress

  • Results collected each match.

  • 5 matches per group, some bye matches for groups with less than 6 archers.

  • Shoot off for match wins and for overall Iron Archer championships

  • The Ben Avery Shooting Facility Indoor range is a highlight.  The range is over 72 feet wide with provides for 13 World Archery spaced targets or 36 Vegas style shooting positions. Lighting is bright.  There is ample space for archers and spectators and can accommodate 18 and 25 meter competition.  Archers are provided with padded chairs and tables.   The range has restrooms and a drinking fountain.   Parking is immediately adjacent to the range.

  • Overall the range was filled with well over 100 archers, family, friends spectators, and tourney staff.  Tourney staff has extensive experience conducting top flight events including state championships and the Arizona Cup USAT/ World Ranking tournament.

Lowlights:

  • Registration requests exceeded range capacity, at least 6 archers were turned away.

  • One archer withdrew too late to be replaced by a waiting list archer.

  • Lack of food sales

Next time:

  • Keep the larger round robin capacity

  • All online registration, waivers and payment to speed up check in.

  • Food vendor

  • Repair roof leaks at coolers and conduit/jboxes

  • Explain match score card and match target sequence

  • Add a club competition (I.e. Arizona JOAD Vegas Team Showdown style)

  • Increase participation capacity of the ranking round

  • Seek ways to increase round robin participation capacity
