Story!
October 30, 2004
The drought in Vegas style
money shoots in the Phoenix area is over and now in the history books,
thanks to Straight N Arrow Archery!
Thank you, Todd and Sammie Hulm,
and Ernesto Moreno for coming up with the idea and making the event
a success for all!
Twenty-five archers, who
will likely compete at the 2005 Las Vegas World Archery Festival in
February, competed in the one day double 300 round. Folks came from as far
away as Tucson and Prescott to compete for a piece of the $500 purse
collected from the $20 payback of the $30 entry fee. Straight N Arrow was
prepared for up to 64 archers ($1280 purse)
During two morning shooting
sessions, all shot a 300 round that established the champion and mid field
flight. The bottom half of the field shot their second 300 round in the
early PM and the championship group shot their 300 round in the mid
afternoon. The 600 score was used to determine the winners. The prize
money made for intense competition in both groups.
Mark Penaz, Phoenix,
was the big winner shooting a clean 300, the first ever at Straight N
Arrow. The winners were all smiles as they collected their prize money
envelopes. To cap off a fantastic Saturday of Vegas style shooting,
Straight N Arrow Archery hosted a one arrow at a time spider shoot off to
win $20 and offer it to all that didn’t otherwise. 10 started, two tied
with Xs, finally Sean Gordon of Prescott won with an inside out X.
Three JOADs competed and are
more experienced by taking part. The archers were universally in support of
more “money shoots”. Tucson and Prescott archers expect more from
their regions to take part next time. All applauded the effort of the
tournament staff and Straight N Arrow hosting the event. They are committed
to offering another shoot sometime before Vegas.
