USA Archery 2013 44th Indoor National and 2013 JOAD National registration materials have been posted.

USA Archery Indoor Nationals - Rio Rancho NM venue:

February 22 - 24, 2013

Below are four downloads from USA Archery:

2013 Tournament Information Packet from USA Archery   12/18/2012)

(12 page pdf explaining the rules and formats for the tournaments.)

Note that there are 2 separate tournaments for JOADs.

FORMS (as of 12/19/2012):

  1. 2013 44th Indoor Nationals fillable form (for Adults and JOADs)

  2. 2013 JOAD Nationals fillable form (for JOADs) (JOAD rules)

  3. 2013 Indoor Nationals Date and Time fillable form (for Adults and JOADs to select their shooting times)

The deadlines are confusing so don't wait until the last minute. AZ JOAD recommends that you get your registration in the mail no later than the end of January or earlier to reserve your spot and to avoid a hefty late fee.  First come first served for shooting time selection.

The Arizona contingent seems to be staying at the Days Inn.

Hearn Copper Classic Report:

What a great Tournament on Saturday and Sunday; Saturday was completely full with 40 archers and had several one arrow shoot offs during the Olympic style rounds in the afternoon. Congratulations to Cinder for winning the JOAD Copper Flight and an extremely close shoot off between Danii from Hearn (compound) and  Ardie from Paseo Vista, a recurve archer to decide the Turquoise flight winner. Congratulations Ardie who won by 1.5 mms,

Great Job to everyone. A lot of good sportsmanship and hand shaking between everyone. While on Sunday we had the Adults play with few brave youth archers that really gave them a run for their money. Congratulations to Austin (16) who ranked first with a perfect 300 score in the ranking rounds and claimed the Copper flight trophy. While the Turquoise flight was also a hard fought battle where Caytie Belzner took each Match to win that trophy.

World Target (1987) and Field Team (2002 and 2006) member Harold Rush presented the ins and out of bare bow, field and international competition insight at the Ben Avery Indoor Range on Saturday November 3, 2012.

Thirteen attended the presentation where Rush spoke regarding

·         Goals and determination

·         Equipment

·         Tuning

·         String walking

·         Preparation

·         Estimating distances

·         Competition

·         People and places

Photo examples of top bare bow competition were shown.  After the 2 ½ hour presentation,  Rush demonstrated bare bow and string walking technique and worked one on one with the archers and their bare bow equipment.   Both Rush and the archers enjoyed the exchange and look forward to conducting another bare bow workshop in the near future.

A big AZJOAD thank you to;

·         Hearn Academy JOAD for providing bottled water.

·         Papago FITA Archers  who brought Muffins snacks.

·         And Harmony Assets for funding the range rental!

·         Harold Rush who prepared and then dedicated a full day in his busy schedule.

Arizona is lucky to have solid bare bow and field archery knowledge with Harold Rush.  The bare bow archers of all ages had a great time taking it all in as a group and learning one on one.   AZ JOAD presented Dr. Rush with a 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic commemorative pin and postage stamp from Great Britain to thank and express appreciation for free workshop.

Seven took part in a rules and judging seminar on August 4, 2012 in Scottsdale led by judge Bob Pian. Interests varied from rules and judging to teaching, instructing, coaching and supporting archers and the archery family.

The seminar was the first of its kind in AZ after the inception or the all new World Archery rules books. The new rule book format was reviewed as well as new rules and web resources. The seminar included rules and judging basis and procedures.

Key topics included multi target face shooting error scoring, judging equipment and tools, scoring arrows, ranking/elimination/team rounds and shoot-offs.

After a pizza lunch, the class reviewed case studies, and some were able to complete the USAA judge program application and application questionnaire.

To all leaders of Arizona Archery Programs.

USAA Junior Dream Team (JDT) Program Invitation:

The JDT is open to junior RECURVE archers between the ages of 12-13 and around 18 (ends at high school graduation). It is a high level archery training program led by US National Head Coach KiSik Lee.

Local archers who have in the past, or who continue to participate in this program include Kiley Larrick, Nathan Yamaguchi, Karissa Yamaguchi, and Andrew Mateo. Coach Mel Nichols and Gary Yamaguchi participate as coaches in the program.

All participants must agree to learn the National Training System (NTS), and to shoot at tournaments using the NTS system. Successful applicants will attend at least two week-long training camps at one of the Olympic Training Centers per year, as well as agree to document their training on a weekly basis, serve as representatives of USA Archery and the United States, and to compete in national ranking events.

Typically, JDT archers place at or near the top of youth archery events in the USA, and many go on to become Resident Athletes at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista CA, south of San Diego.

For 2012, the JDT Selection Camp will be held at the Chula Vista OTC from November 29th to December 2nd.

Anyone who can meet the qualifications for the camp and who is interested in trying out for the team, please ask them to submit their application as soon as possible. Anyone who has questions can address them to Gary Yamaguchi at gyflyfish@cox.net

The deadline for submissions is September 24th, 2012.

From Mike Cullumber, USA Archery Arizona, Arizona State Archery Association President

"This is shaping up to be a great year for certification of Instructors and Coaches in Arizona. We have already had a couple of Level 2 classes, a level 3 class in late 2011 and more coming. We will be having a Level 3 class in late September. Information will be coming soon for this class. As a reminder the first step is to become a USA Archery member. Be sure to check out the family membership!

Below is information regarding several scheduled upcoming classes. Please spread the word to all of your Archers and Parents.

This is important. In order for your organization to succeed and for target archery to grow, Archery programs must have more than one certified Instructor or Coach on board.

The ideal situation is active club participation with a structure that includes; 1 - Level 3 coach, 2 to 4 - Level 2 Instructors and 3 to 5 - Level 1 Instructors. A goal that our Arizona clubs strive for.

August 4 - A Level 1 (beginning) Instructor Certification Class.

Level 2 Instructor Sandra Reynolds will be giving a Level 1 Instructors Certification Course on Sunday August 4, 8am-2pm at the Paseo Vista Archery Range. The Park is on the NW corner of Ocotillo and McQueen. Class fee is $75 includes book, test, certification.

A Level 1 Instructor is most closely associated with a "grassroots" program that is short-term in scope and focused on introducing basic archery skills to beginners. Such programs would include: camps, Scouting, 4-H, and Parks and Recreation. This class is great for JOAD Archers 15 years or older and Parents who want to help in club activities.

To register email Sandra at designedbydesign@gmail.com. Note: Must be 15 years old to be certified, if you will be 15 soon you can take class and wait to send it into USA Archery. Any Level 1 Instructor who wants individual insurance coverage will need to become a member of USA Archery and complete a background check (you must be 18 years old to be covered).

August 18 and 19 - Level 2 Instructor Certification Class

A Level 2 Instructor works with a more established archery program such as J.O.A.D, A.S.A.P., college clubs and local clubs with a strong beginner component. Level 2 Instructors are also certified to teach Level 1 courses.

Ben Avery Update, April 2012

Many things are happening at Ben Avery http://www.azgfd.gov/outdoor_recreation/basf_facilities.shtml

Here is a summary:

  • The 23rd AAE Arizona Cup was a huge success. International team participation continues to rise.

  • The AZGFD Expo took place at the end of March. The JOAD outreach booth was staffed by Hearn, Corner, Targeteers and Desert Sky Archers JOADs. Inquiries ranged from bow hunting to Hunger games to target.

  • Archers may check in at any one of three convenient places, the BASF main range, the Clay target center, or the AZGFD headquarters front desk on weekdays.

  • Adult fee is $7 per day. Youth ages 5-17 is free. Note that youths are to check in and receive a $0 receipt. Keep the receipt with you and present to the rangers to verify daily check in.

  • Air guns of Arizona conduct events at the air gun outdoor field course located to west of the FITA event range parking lot in the cooler months. See the website for a the air gun event calendar http://www.airgunsofarizona.com/Airgunners/

  • Thanks to a donation from Kilauea Crushers/Arrowhead materials, ¼” minus rock has been delivered to level area for storage units and raise low areas under the central canopies. Volunteers with rock moving equipment are needed to help spread the rock.

  • The FITA practice range, across the street from the FITA event range receives steady use.

  • AZGFD/BASF host intro to archery classes regularly. Contact AZGFD/BASF for more information.

Desert Sky Archers at BASF news http://www.desertskyarchers.com/

  • The Desert Sky Archers will soon be operating from their own 40’ storage unit at the BASF FITA range. The space will allow DSA to expand club programs

  • DSA and BASF are collaborating to host the BASF 3D league.

  • As the summer approaches, DSA is planning indoor range use for club and class activities.

Archers of all ages are representative of sportsmanship, safety and integrity. Welcome others to join in target archery fun as a life time sport. Questions? or to volunteer: Contact azjoad@cox.net

March 27, 2012

Final chance. ASAA JOAD Clubs, we need your flyers to hand out at the AZGFD Expo. http://www.azgfd.gov/outdoor_recreation/showcase.shtml

We expect 100 to 500 very interested inquiries about where to find a place to shoot archery. These are your future club members and those that will take over your clubs when you retire.

Get your flyers to Rick Bachman july396@cox.net

ALSO, we have very few helpers at the Expo. We need volunteers to answer question about your club and what target archery at your club is like. Please email Rick and volunteer july396@cox.net

I have worked this event for several years. It is best to have a group of people work the booth and then rotate staffing the booth while others walk around and see all there is to see and do.

Tournament Results

First off, I would like to thank the following people for their hard work. Without their help, events like this would not be possible.

  • Scott and Tiffany Waldrop

  • Valerie and Brian Bullis

  • Lynn and Mike Van Patter

  • Tim Sexton

  • Janice Price

  • Bob Pian

  • Mike Cullumber

  • Danielle Reynolds

  • Sandra Reynolds

  • Christiane Murphy

  • Diana LeBeau

  • Terry LeBeau

If I have forgotten someone, I apologize.

Fifty eight archers participated. We had archers there from several countries; Canada, Ireland, Denmark, Mexico, Venezuela, and of course the USA.

As the day of the event approached we were a little worried about the weather. The wind did blow making the event more challenging, but the bad weather that made national news held off for a day.

The format was based on 72 arrows in the AM and 72 Arrows in the PM; this was done as not all archers shot in both AM and PM. The high of the two was used if the arch shot in both. While the scores were tallied we played an elimination round game. All archers that participated shot the distance in which they competed. 3 arrow ends with a progressive score being required to make the next end. Matt MacDonald won the inaugural event (we will do this again as everyone said they enjoyed it).

At the end of the day there were a lot of tired smiles and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

Thank you.

“Done” FREE! Tourney rules and procedures seminar PLUS BASF work party was held on February 18, 2012 at BASF http://www.azarchery.com/page13.php?post=133

Desert Sky Archers (DSA) at BASF, Saturday February 18, 2012 was full with a beginners glass, club session, clean up/fix up day and rule and procedures seminar.

Refuse was gathered and disposed of, 2 target stands were modified to be 24” taller than normal for 70 meter blank bale use, the parking lot and range was flagged for vendor plaza, 1M, media, waiting, equipment and spectator area lines.

At 11 AM, Paula Simpson of the Targeteers JOAD and DSA members visited with DSA leader Rick Bachman and Judge Bob Pian and discussed a wide variety of topics

Topics included:

  • Differences between NFAA youth and USAA JOAD age categories and bow shooting styles and names.

  • Preparation

  • Helping the tournament help the archers

  • Importance of official practice

  • 3 meter line

  • Completing score cards

  • Awards ceremony

  • Sportsmanship/Code of Conduct

“NFAA and USAA are different, each groups rules and procedures must be learned”

“Many feel powerless when they perceive a problem. The key is to act promptly by informing a tournament official and following up that the concern is being managed. Ideally problems are asked and answered before the arrow are removed.”

“The rules are there to facilitate a fair, effective, efficient and meaningful event. The rules are not in place to hinder or prevent.”

“When questions arise, ask yourself, how can we help and grow the sport”

“Archers, parents, family, friends, officials and judges all have different experience, skills and knowledge.’

“Experience a key to success. All experienced archer and family members can look back on how they initially conducted themselves and how they conduct themselves differently today.”
