The FITA Practice Range at Ben Avery Shooting Facility receives a facelift!

If you haven’t already been out to the practice range at Ben Avery, be sure to stop by the next time you are on site.  The range recently received a new look from Eagle Scout candidate Colt Van Patter who took on the FITA Practice Range as his Eagle Scout Service Project.  Colt, along with 22 volunteers over three days, worked tirelessly to give this range a much needed upgrade.

These volunteers moved rocks to widen the range, pulled weeds, raked and groomed the area, and installed a permanent shooting line.  In addition, the old carpet bales and metal stands were moved to the broadhead side of the range and new regulation target stands were constructed to replace the old ones.

Six used target bales purchased and donated by ASAA and Desert Sky Archers have been placed on the new target stands to create a regulation range for target archers to practice.

In the coming weeks, Colt intends to place “diapers” on each of the targets and insert wind flags.

This project was made possible by donations from a number of contributors.

The Arizona State Archery Association would like to congratulate PSE Staff Shooter and Arizona resident Becky Pearson for being awarded the 2010 NFAA Amateur Female Shooter of the Year.

The NFAA Amateur Shooter of the year is an award sponsored by Mathews Archery and Easton Technical Products.

An accomplished archer since 1978, Becky has compiled an impressive bundle of wins over her 30 plus year career, and currently relies on a customized PSE Bow Madness and B-Stinger stabilizers to keep her arrows in the gold.

To qualify for this award, Becky had to shoot at the Las Vegas Open, the NFAA Indoor National, the Marked 3D shoot at Redding, the Dakota Classic, and the NFAA Outdoor Nationals. Becky had the highest combined score, which enabled her to come home with the trophy.

Congratulations to Becky for her impressive achievement!

2010 Arizona State JOAD Outdoor sets records with attendance and scores in the newest outdoor archery venue.

Results

Steve Yee, Arizona State Archery Association - April 17-18, 2010.

Arizona’s newest outdoor archery venue hosted the 2010 Arizona State JOAD Outdoor tournament in a grand way on April 17 and 18, 2010.

In its first major public debut, the Paseo Vista Archery Club opened its doors to a perfect score – record club participation ever for a JOAD outdoor tournament, new state records being set, and heaps of praise for the new venue and the club.

Day one started with excellent shooting weather – extremely light wind, moderate temperatures to the mid 80’s, and plenty of shade for the archers and the viewing gallery alike.  Day two began right where things left off – with similar weather presenting the archers with superb shooting conditions that were accentuated by the wonderful design and backdrops of the venue.

Twenty eight archers representing 8 clubs participated in the tournament.  Archers from 8 years old to 18 represented every major division, with the Bowman and Cub divisions being the most contested.

After the second shooting day was complete and all the totals tallied, 18 new state records were set by 5 different archers, with the crown jewel of a perfect 4th distance score of 360/22x capping off the tournaments’ results.

The following State records were set:

Yeoman Compound Male: Spencer Yee - 20m, 340; 20m, 337; 10m, 348; 10m, 358; Total – 1383

Cub Male Recurve:  Andrew Mateo – 40m, 320; 30m, 316; 20m, 336; Total – 1239

Cub Male Compound:  James Rutherford – 50m, 327; 40m, 352; 30m, 352; 20m, 360 (22x); Total – 1391

Cadet Male Recurve:  Nathan Yamaguchi – 50m, 293

Junior Female Compound:  Mackenzie Kieborz – 50m, 324; 30m, 352; Total, 1328.
